Welcome from Chancellor Nies

September 1, 2026

Greetings Campus Community,

Welcome to the start of the 2026–2027 academic year!

This time of year brings an unmatched energy. It is fueled by a curiosity for discovery, the strong connections we’ve built across UMD and the broader Duluth community, and the genuine compassion you show one another every day.

The excitement has been hard to miss. Even Governor Walz made a surprise visit on our first day of the semester to join a political science class and meet with student government and football team leaders. During his time here, he repeatedly noted the sense of hope and energy that UMD brings to our state.

As we kick off this year, we continue to build on our strengths as a student-centered research university where learning, discovery, and community impact go hand in hand. From groundbreaking student and faculty research and new academic programs to strategic investments in our campus, we are focused on creating opportunities for every student scholar to thrive. These priorities are central to both our campus Strategic Pathway and the University of Minnesota’s Elevate Extraordinary plan, both of which are moving into the implementation phase. Expect to hear more details about these efforts in the coming weeks.

Throughout this week, I’ll be spending time at our “Ask Me Anything” tables located around campus. If you’re new to UMD, please stop by and say hello! It’s a great way to connect and a gentle reminder that you’re not navigating this transition alone. Whether you have logistical questions, need directions about navigating the red and blue concourses, or just want to talk, we are all here to support your success.

Thank you for choosing this campus to learn, work, discover, and grow. I am so glad you are here, and I look forward to an extraordinary year together.

Warmly,

Charles Nies, Chancellor
